About this place

Ask the riders and campers of Torrijos where to pitch a tent with a view, and sooner or later someone says Red Datum. It's the open grassland on the ridge above Brgy. Bolo — the same red-soil high ground that gave nearby Pulang Lupa (literally "red earth") its name. On Google Maps it goes by "Red Datum (Camping Site and Motor Cycle Paradise)," and the pin sits only a couple hundred meters from the Pulang Lupa Shrine, where the town remembers the 1900 Battle of Pulang Lupa.

What's up top

Not much — and that's the appeal. The photos visitors have shared on the listing show wide, grassy slopes rolling off the ridge, a small nipa shade hut under a hand-painted "I ♥ RED DATUM" sign, and a view that drops over green hills all the way to the sea and the islands beyond. It's open sky in every direction, which is exactly why campers like it.

No amenities — come prepared

Be clear-eyed about this one. When a group of overlanders asked in a Marinduque camping thread for the best campsite on the island, a local who shared photos of tents pitched up there put it simply: "No amenities you're looking for but the views are incredible." There are no restrooms, no water and no store on the hill, so everything you need comes up with you — and everything you brought goes back down with you.

A riders' hill

The "motorcycle paradise" tag isn't just for show. A good share of the photos on the listing are of cyclists with loaded bikepacking rigs and barkadas who rode up together, posing on the grass with the coast behind them. If you're doing the Marinduque Loop on two wheels, this is one of the nicest rest stops on the Torrijos side.

Pair it with Pulang Lupa

Since you're practically next door, walk over to the Pulang Lupa Shrine and its monument — the hilltop where Marinduqueños fought American forces in September 1900. Red Datum is where you stay for the view; Pulang Lupa is where you learn why this ridge matters.

Good to know

There's no published entrance or camping fee, but the listing carries a contact number (0966 378 3075). Give it a call before you haul up your tent so you know the current arrangement, especially if you're coming as a big group.

Best Time to Visit

Go in the dry months, roughly November to May, when the ridge road is kinder and the grass is dry enough to sleep on. Early morning and late afternoon are the gentlest hours up there — the middle of the day is wide open to the sun with very little shade, so please don't plan a noon hike.

What to Bring

Bring everything, because there's nothing up there — your tent and sleeping mat, enough drinking water for the whole stay, food, a headlamp, and a jacket for the night. A hat and sunscreen are a must since there's hardly any shade, and please bring trash bags so the hill stays as clean as you found it.

How to Get Here

From Torrijos town proper, head north toward Brgy. Bolo and ask for the road up to Pulang Lupa — every tricycle and habal-habal driver knows the shrine. Red Datum is just a short way from the shrine on the same ridge, so follow the Google Maps pin for the last stretch. If you're driving or riding up yourself, take the climb slowly and make sure your brakes are in good shape for the way down.
