About this place

Off the coast of Santa Cruz, Marinduque, Maniwaya Island is the province's most popular and recognizable island destination — a spread of white sand beaches, clear turquoise waters, and the Palad Sandbar that emerges at low tide. For travelers who came to Marinduque mostly for the islands, Maniwaya is the answer to "where do I go?"

What's On the Island

Maniwaya is built around the classic small-island experience:

- White sand beaches along the coast - Clear turquoise waters for snorkeling and free diving - Snorkeling and free diving are the two most popular activities - Resort accommodations for overnight visitors - Day-trip access for those just doing the island as a stop

Palad Sandbar — The Famous Stop

Maniwaya's most photographed feature is the Palad Sandbar — a ribbon of white sand that appears only during low tide, creating a temporary beach that feels surreal under your feet. It's the single shot that defines most travelers' Maniwaya experience, and it's worth timing the boat trip around the tide schedule for.

Resorts on the Island

Several resorts handle Maniwaya stays, with the established names being:

- Wawie's Beach Resort — long-running, full activity menu, package tours - Islas Moriones Beach Resort — newer property, strong service reputation - 3 Brothers Beach Resort — classic island resort - Marikit-na Beach Resort — peaceful, beachfront - Cozea Beach Lodge — small, intimate, single-room - Playa Amara / AMARA Sands — Maniwaya brand

Getting There and Costs

- Entrance fee: Minimum PHP 20, with additional fees for camping or resort cottages - Departure: Buyabod Port (Santa Cruz) is the standard mainland launch - Boats: Coordinate through resort phone numbers in advance

Phone contacts for boat coordination:

Why It Anchors a Trip

Marinduque has a few different "headline" experiences — Moriones, Bagumbungan, the Boac heritage walk. Maniwaya is the island headline: white sand, blue water, the Palad Sandbar, and the kind of clean simplicity that justifies the whole boat ride. For a multi-day Santa Cruz itinerary, Maniwaya is the Day 1 must-do.

Best Time to Visit

Dry season — November through May — for safe crossings and clear water. Weekdays are blissfully quiet; weekends bring waves of day-trippers from Buyabod Port. If quiet is the point, go midweek.

What to Bring

Sunscreen, swimwear, water shoes for the rocky bits, dry bag, and snorkel gear if you have it (the water clarity rewards it). Cash for everything because there are NO ATMs on the island and almost nowhere takes cards. Pack water and snacks for the day if you're not going as a paying guest at one of the resorts. A hat for the sun.

How to Get Here

Maniwaya is reached by banca from Buyabod Port in Brgy. Buyabod, Sta Cruz — that's the standard launch point, NOT Balanacan (the existing AI-template directions on this got it wrong). From Sta Cruz Centro, tricycle to Buyabod (10–15 minutes); from Balanacan Port, jeepney to Sta Cruz Centro first then tricycle to Buyabod. Boat schedules vary with sea conditions; ask at the port for the day's departures.
