🏝️Ungab Rock Formation

Mongpong Island, Santa Cruz, Marinduque
Get Directions

About this place

On the eastern coast of Mongpong Island in Santa Cruz, the Ungab Rock Formation is one of Marinduque's most iconic natural landmarks — a striking arch formed through years of erosion, standing next to a beach and surrounded by clear blue and turquoise waters. For travelers doing the Maniwaya island-hopping circuit, Ungab is the second stop on most itineraries, and one of the most photographed.

The Arch

Ungab's defining feature is the arch sculpted by years of wave erosion — the kind of geological feature that takes thousands of years to form. It rises from the sea floor next to the Mongpong shoreline, framing a section of beach and surrounding water. From the right angle, with the right tide, it's one of the most distinctive shots Marinduque offers.

Visiting

- Entrance fee: PHP 80 per person - Best access: Pumpboat ride from Buyabod Port (Santa Cruz mainland) - Most common itinerary: Combined with Palad Sandbar as part of an island-hopping day from Maniwaya

Coordinating a Visit

Ungab is rarely visited as a standalone stop — it's almost always part of a combo tour:

- From Maniwaya Island: ~PHP 1,500 boat rental for both Palad Sandbar + Ungab Rock - From Buyabod Port direct: ~PHP 4,000 boat rental for Palad + Ungab - Tour packages from resorts: Most Maniwaya resorts include Ungab in their day-tour offerings

Phone contacts for boat coordination:

- 0926 643 9064 - 0908 821 3178 - 0915 488 4244 - 0995 291 6414 - (046) 404 0195

What to Bring

- Swim gear — the surrounding water is genuinely worth a swim - Snorkel / mask — coral and marine life around the arch - Sun protection — open boat ride and exposed beach - Camera — this is a marquee photo location - Cash for the entrance fee

What's Around

Ungab is one of three "must-do" Santa Cruz–side island stops:

1. Palad Sandbar — appears at low tide 2. Ungab Rock Formation — this stop 3. Maniwaya Island beaches — the home base

Together, that trio anchors the standard Marinduque island-hopping day from Buyabod or Maniwaya.

Why It Earns Its Reputation

Marinduque has plenty of beaches and a few caves, but iconic, easily-recognizable natural rock formations are rarer. Ungab fills that role — a single arch that's photographable from a hundred angles, that locals point to with pride, and that almost every Marinduque visitor leaves with a shot of. It's a deserved icon.

Best Time to Visit

Dry season for the banca crossing and stable footing. Visit at low tide for full exposure of the formations — they look most dramatic when you can walk around them. Mornings are coolest.

What to Bring

Sturdy shoes — the rocks are sharp and you don't want to land on them. Water, hat, sunscreen, dry bag, and cash for the boat and guide. A small first aid kit with bandages isn't paranoid for this one.

How to Get Here

Ungab is on Mongpong Island, off the Sta Cruz coast. Reached by banca — most operators include it in island-hopping tours from Buyabod Port. Alternative launches from elsewhere on the Sta Cruz mainland exist; ask at the port for current arrangements.
