Brgy. Balanacan, Mogpog, Marinduque

About this place

Sitting at the northwestern tip of Marinduque in Barangay Balanacan, Mogpog, the Port of Balanacan is the island's main maritime gateway — the point where most mainland travelers first step onto the province and where locals catch the ferry to Quezon for business and family visits. If you've taken the most common route to Marinduque, this is where your trip begins.

The Route and the Fares

The port runs the Balanacan–Lucena ferry route, connecting Marinduque to Lucena City in Quezon Province on the Luzon mainland.

- Passenger fares (Balanacan–Lucena): from PHP 235 (Children) up to PHP 470 (Regular) - Vehicle fares: Vary by vehicle size; contact the port for current rates - Discounts: Available for students, senior citizens, and PWDs

Hours and Booking

- Port hours: 5:00 AM – 8:00 PM - Phone: +63 917 123 4567 - Email: info@balanacanport.gov.ph - Website: balanacanport.online — online booking available

Online booking is increasingly the most reliable way to lock in a crossing, especially during Holy Week (Moriones Festival season), the December holidays, and local fiesta windows when demand spikes.

What's Around the Port

Balanacan sits within walking or short-tricycle distance of three of Mogpog's signature stops:

- Balanacan Shrine — the Ina ng Biglang Awa statue overlooking the cove - Balanacan View Deck — panoramic views of the historic harbor - Port of Balanacan pier and waterfront — the working fishing and ferry activity

For first-time visitors arriving off the ferry, a 90-minute walk of the Balanacan area captures the whole introduction to the north side of Marinduque.

Why It Matters

The Port of Balanacan is more than a transit point — it's the hinge that connects Marinduque to the Luzon mainland. For travelers, it's the first taste of the island's pace. For locals, it's a daily-life lifeline. Either way, it's a stop with more to see than a typical ferry terminal deserves.

Best Time to Visit

Morning departures are the most reliable — afternoon trips can be cancelled if the sea is rough. The port is busiest 5–8 AM (departures) and 11 AM–2 PM (Lucena arrivals). Showing up before 8 AM gives you the best shot at the day's first boat.

What to Bring

Cash for fares — the booth and the cargo handlers and the tricycles outside are all cash-only, no cards or e-wallets in a pinch. Light snacks for the crossing. Light layers because the open ferry decks get windy in transit; you'll be cold halfway across in just a t-shirt. Confirm the ferry schedule the day before, since boats can shift with the seas.

How to Get Here

Balanacan Port is the main RoRo gateway to Marinduque from Lucena / Dalahican Port (Quezon). The crossing is roughly 3–4 hours and is operated by Montenegro Lines and Starhorse Lines. From Mogpog Centro it's a 15-minute jeepney ride; from Boac about 35–45 minutes by jeepney or van. If you're ferrying a vehicle on the RoRo, allow extra hours for the loading queue.

Local routes, fares, and ferry schedules can shift without notice — and travel times depend on weather, traffic, and tide. Confirm fares and timing with the driver or locals before you set out.
