About this place

The Immaculate Conception Cathedral Parish — commonly known as Boac Cathedral — is a Roman Catholic church and cathedral in the town center of Boac, Marinduque. It is the seat of the Diocese of Boac and is surrounded by centuries-old defensive walls.

The cathedral was declared a Philippine Important Cultural Property in 2018, and in 2021 it was designated as a jubilee church during the celebration of the 500 Years of Christianity in the Philippines.

Centuries-Old Walls and Sacred Heritage

The cathedral houses the Sacred Heart Pastoral Center and the Diocesan Shrine of Mahal na Birhen ng Biglang Awa. As one TripAdvisor visitor put it, "The cathedral has this nice, ancient, rustic feel. Loved the carving on the doors, the huge bell and the whole facade."

A Designated Jubilee Church

The 2021 jubilee church designation, made during the country's 500 Years of Christianity celebration, placed Boac Cathedral within the broader Filipino Catholic story — a status that makes it a meaningful pilgrimage stop on the island.

A Silent Witness to Marinduque's History

As one TripAdvisor visitor noted, "It's amazing how they maintained it's original shape after all these year (228 years this year 2020). It is said that this is one of the silent witness of the history of Marinduque." The cathedral sits at the center of town, located uphill — a short climb that's part of the experience of visiting.

Whether you come as a pilgrim or a heritage traveler, Boac Cathedral is a must-visit. As one TripAdvisor user simply put it: "Very Old and well maintained and beautiful interiors. Located at the Center of Town. It is located Uphill."

Best Time to Visit

Sunday mornings during Mass for the community feel — that's when the cathedral comes alive. Weekday mornings if you want quiet for reflection; the building is a stone fortress-cathedral with serious history and it deserves an unhurried look. Holy Week is the cathedral's defining moment — Boac is the religious heart of Marinduque and the cathedral is the focal point of the Moriones devotion. If you're not coming for the festival, avoid Holy Week proper because it gets shoulder-to-shoulder.

What to Bring

Dress respectfully — covered shoulders, long pants or a long skirt. The cathedral is an active church, the seat of the Boac diocese, and locals notice if you walk in dressed for the beach. Bring water because the climb up the hill from the plaza is short but exposed and you'll be hot by the top. Small bills for candles or the donation box if you're moved to give. A hat for the walk over. If you're with a child, hand sanitizer — you'll touch a lot of railings.

How to Get Here

The cathedral sits on a low hill in Brgy. San Juan, overlooking Boac — you can see it from most of the town center; you can't really miss it. From Balanacan Port, jeepney to Boac Centro and walk uphill from the plaza. The climb is short but exposed; do it in the cooler morning hours if you can, and don't rush it if you're not used to the heat. Tricycles can take you to the base if you'd rather skip the walk.
