About this place

National Museum of the Philippines – Marinduque: Where Heritage Lives in Boac

Housed inside what used to be the Escuela de Niños — the oldest Catholic school in Marinduque — the National Museum of the Philippines – Marinduque in Boac tells a story that goes far beyond the island itself. It's where Marinduque's role in early maritime trade, its natural resources, and its deep religious traditions all come together under one roof.

A Building with Its Own History

Before it became a museum in 1995, this old Spanish-era building had already lived several lives — a school, then a stop along various governmental and educational purposes. That history is baked into the walls themselves, which makes walking through it feel less like a standard museum visit and more like stepping through the layered timeline of Boac itself.

Exhibits Worth Lingering Over

The permanent collection anchors on three standout exhibitions: "The Journey Towards the Protection of the Philippine Rise," "Submerged History: The Marinduque Shipwrecks," and "Moryonan Art and Devotion," the last of which captures the artistry and spiritual depth behind the island's famous Moriones Festival. Together they cover the Southern Tagalog islands of Marinduque and Romblon — two provinces whose stories don't always make it into mainstream Philippine history.

Why It Belongs on Your Itinerary

One visitor called it a "stellar blend of travel inspiration and cultural storytelling," and that's the right way to think about it. Whether you're a history buff or just a curious traveler passing through Boac, the museum gives you the context you didn't know you needed — and it makes the rest of the island hit differently for it.

Plan 60-90 minutes here. It's one of the few stops in Marinduque that actually rewards slow browsing.

Best Time to Visit

Tuesday through Sunday during museum hours — it's closed Mondays, per the standard National Museum schedule. Mornings are quietest. Allow at least an hour, ideally 90 minutes, to do the exhibits justice — the collection covers the Moriones tradition, local artifacts, and pre-colonial finds, and rushing through it is a waste.

What to Bring

Cash for entry — National Museum branches charge a small token amount or are sometimes free, depending on the day. Comfortable shoes; the floors are stone and you'll be standing for at least an hour if you do the exhibits properly. A respectful interest in local history. Water and snacks aren't allowed inside, so eat before you go. A camera if photography is allowed (ask at the desk; some galleries restrict it).

How to Get Here

The museum is right at Boac Plaza, fronting the cathedral. From Balanacan Port, jeepney to Boac Centro and walk over from the public market. The building is hard to miss — heritage architecture, prominent location, and the National Museum signage is clear.
